Choosing cabinets involves more than picking a colour and a door style. The finish sitting on top of that colour changes the room as much as the colour does, and it changes what living with it is like.
What gloss does
Gloss reflects light. In a small or north-facing kitchen that is a real advantage, because it bounces what light you have back into the room and makes the space read larger. It also suits contemporary slab doors and frameless construction, where the flat uninterrupted run of fronts is the point.
The trade-off is that gloss shows everything. Fingerprints, water spots, and on darker colours every bit of dust. It is not harder to clean, but you will clean it more often.
What matte does
Matte absorbs light instead of reflecting it. That reads as softer and more understated, and it hides fingerprints and smudges far better, which matters most on the doors under the sink and around the range.
Matte also holds colour differently. A deep green or navy looks richer matte than it does gloss, where the reflection washes some of the depth out.
How to decide
Work from the room rather than from a preference. A bright kitchen with big windows can carry matte comfortably. A darker galley usually wants the light back. A house with young children and a lot of traffic at hand height is easier to live with in matte.
There is no rule against mixing, either. A matte perimeter with a gloss island, or the reverse, is a deliberate choice and often a better one than committing the whole room to a single finish.
The most reliable way to settle it is to see both under your own light. Bring your plans to the showroom in Antioch and put the samples side by side.
