Outdoor living has become a serious part of how people use their homes around Nashville, and outdoor cabinets are now a regular part of what we build. They are also where we see the most avoidable mistakes.
Treating it like an indoor kitchen
The single biggest error is specifying indoor cabinetry for an outdoor space. Tennessee gives you humid summers, hard freezes, and swings between the two inside the same week. Materials chosen for a climate-controlled room will not survive that, no matter how good they looked on day one.
Underestimating the sun
People plan around rain and forget about ultraviolet light. Direct sun will fade a finish and degrade a surface faster than most rainfall will, and the south-facing side of an installation will age visibly differently from the rest if it is not planned for.
Ignoring drainage
Water gets in. That is a given. What matters is whether it can get back out. Cabinet bases that trap standing water fail from the bottom up, usually invisibly, and by the time it shows the damage is done.
Leaving the grill until last
Heat clearances, gas runs and where the grill actually vents all constrain the layout, and they are much easier to design around than to retrofit. Decide the appliance before the cabinet run, not after.
Forgetting the electrical
